Chapter 13

Emerson

The Empowering With Love Luncheon came faster than Emerson thought it would. The venue they booked was big enough to host one thousand people, and every ticket had been purchased. Almost every attendee had also purchased a meal voucher and a meet and greet package. Emerson had been able to use her influence to snag Esha, an up and coming Baltimore singer, and the buzz from that alone was enough to carry the luncheon. There were a few public speakers booked as well, and Emerson was excited for the information they had to give. She hoped the women walked away feeling bossy and like they could do anything.

In the days leading up to the event, Emerson wrestled with the idea of asking Jacob to attend with her. On one hand, it would give the impression of a power couple, but on the other hand, she didn’t want to encourage Jacob and give him the false impression that she was more committed than she was. Her first priority was to her business. In the end, she decided Jacob could be her date.

They were sitting at dinner when she asked him. They had just ordered their meals, and the waiter had opened a bottle of wine.

Emerson took a sip and said, “I was thinking you might want to come to my luncheon.”

Jacob smiled. “There’s nothing else I’d want to do than to watch my woman run the show and see her in her element.” He reached for her hand.

She smiled, hiding the fact she was second guessing her invitation.

Jacob squeezed her hand. “I can’t wait until we live in the same house and get ready for these events together.”

Now he was jumping the gun and talking about living together. Emerson didn’t want Jacob to feel like she was distancing herself from him since he said the L word, but maybe that was what she needed to do. He claimed he didn’t want to rush her, but it was obvious he was ready to speed things along. Emerson honestly didn’t know if she was ready for all that. Not to mention Cali was still in the picture. She didn’t want to break her heart and have another Macy on her hands. It was too much. Emerson just wanted to enjoy the luncheon that she’d worked so hard to put together.

At the event, Cecil Tilson, a former CNN newscaster, was on stage speaking, but Emerson and her guests were more focused on each other. They were seated at a table in the front of the ballroom and over to the side. It was the perfect vantage point to see the entire ballroom, the stage, and to have their own conversation without anyone hearing. Mikayla had already met Jacob by accident, but of course, Charlie dragged it out.

“It’s so good to finally meet the man that’s been putting a smile on our friend’s face,” she said, placing a hand over her heart. “I thought your name was Casper at first.”

“Charlie,” Mikayla said and rolled her eyes.
